Users can only choose whether to perform a backup of a certain category. The second, incremental backup stores only files that are changed after a previous backup.įile backup in Windows Vista does not allow users to choose specific files, locations, or users to back up instead, it backs up content from all users based on categories: audio tracks, compressed files, documents, email, photos, recorded television shows, videos, and additional user files. The first, normal backup, stores everything selected for backup. Two methods of file backup are supported. The Backup and Restore app can create backup copies of individual files and folders. The Windows Server counterpart of Backup and Restore is called Windows Server Backup.īackup and Restore supports two different types of backup: File and folder backup, and system image. Despite its deprecation, however, it is part of all versions of Windows released thereafter. Microsoft deprecated Backup and Restore in Windows 8.0, recommending to use the File History app for file-based backup and a third-party solution for system imaging. But its full set of features are only available on high-end editions of Windows, i.e., the Professional, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. Unlike its predecessor, it supports CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays discs as backup media.īackup and Restore offers file and folder backup in all editions of Windows. It replaces NTBackup, which has been part of Windows since Windows NT 3.51. It can create file and folder backups, as well as system images backups, to be used for recovery in the event of data corruption, hard disk drive failure, or malware infection. Backup and Restore (formerly Backup and Restore Center ) is the primary backup component of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

It is set during Earth's final days attempting to repel Mental's invading hordes. In February 2011, Croteam announced a more realistic-looking Prequel called Serious Sam III: BFE. It features enhanced graphics, ragdoll physics, and various minor tweaks, but the gameplay is otherwise unchanged. In November 2009 and April 2010 Croteam released a remake of both halves of the first game called Serious Sam HD. When we say hordes, we mean hordes, especially in those nice open expanses where you truly get to appreciate how much opposition Sam's up against - and, consequently, how much of a Badass he is. The game series was praised for being a well-made throwback to old-skool shooters where the emphasis is on massacring enemy hordes instead of dueling small, smart squads. The final battle has yet to come, though. In Serious Sam: Next Encounter, Mental attempts to get retaliation on Sam by creating a pint-sized evil clone of Sam.īy Serious Sam II, Sam has finally made it to Sirius, where he is made to collect five artifacts to weaken Mental and set up the overlord's downfall. Battling across South America, Babylon and medieval Europe, Sam brings down a wind deity, a cyborg giant larva and Mental's summoner before finding a second backup ship. Unfortunately, he collides with a " Croteam Crate-Bus" and crash-lands in Mayan-era South America, which is where The Second Encounter begins. Sam "Serious" Stone is the (un)lucky man.Īrmed with only a head-implanted AI and a self-replenishing revolver, Serious Sam battles through ancient Egypt in The First Encounter, bringing down Mental's HUGE warlock Ugh-Zan III and finding a Sirian ship in the Great Pyramid, with which he heads for space. With Mental's forces pressing onto Earth, the decision is made to send a single elite back in time via rediscovered Sirian time-travel technology known as the "Time Lock" and defeat Mental in the past, thereby changing history in Humanity's favor. In the 22nd century, Mental has returned, bringing with him a vast army that spacefaring Humanity fails to beat back. Although many Sirians were killed, Mental was repelled. In days long past, the alien race known as the Sirians did battle with the alien overlord "Mental". Again, this is thought to be due to special phytonutrients that may slow sugar uptake into the bloodstream. Drinking blended berries isn’t just neutral-it improves blood sugar control. By adding blended berries to sugar water, you don’t get the hypoglycemic dip and you don’t get that burst of fat in the blood. It may be due to a phytonutrient called mangiferin, which may slow sugar absorption through the intestinal wall.īerries help control blood sugar so well they can counter the effects of sugar water even when they’re pureed in a blender. The same goes for mangoes, as demonstrated with powdered mango, and you can’t get any more fiber-disrupted than that. Bananas in general, though, may actually improve blood sugars over time. There was a study that compared whole bananas to blended bananas and didn’t see any difference, but they only looked for an hour and it was while participants were exercising. The take-away? Eating apples is better than drinking apple smoothies, but who drinks apple smoothies? What about bananas, mangoes, or berries? What if you disrupt that fiber with blending but sip it as slowly as the apple eating? The results were a little better, but not as good as just eating the apple. So, it wasn’t the speed-it was the lack of fiber. They found this had the same results as drinking quickly. If it’s just the speed, we could simply sip the juice over 17 minutes and it should be the same, right? Researchers put it to the test. So, maybe these dramatic differences have more to do with how fast the fruit entered our system rather than its physical form. Eating four and a half cups of apples took 17 minutes, but drinking four and a half cups of apples in smoothie form only took about 6 minutes, and you can down two cups of juice in about 90 seconds. The rebound fall in blood sugars, which occurred during the second and third hours after drinking juice and puree, “was in striking contrast to the practically steady level after eating apples.” This finding not only indicates how important the presence of fiber is, but also perhaps whether or not the fiber is physically disrupted, like in a blender. What would happen, though, if you put those four and a half cups of sliced apples in a blender with some water and pureed them into an apple smoothie? Despite still having all the fiber, it still caused that hypoglycemic dip. The removal of fiber in the production of fruit juice can enhance the insulin response and result in this “rebound hypoglycemia.” (You can see all of these spikes and drops in my Green Smoothies: What Does the Science Say?video.) What happens if you take in the same amount of sugar in apple juice form-about two cups? Your body overreacts, releasing too much insulin, and you end up dipping below where you started. In the three hours after eating four and a half cups of apple slices, your blood sugar just goes up and comes down normally. The same thing happens even after drinking apple juice. In response, our body dumps fat into our bloodstream as if we’re starving because our blood sugars just dropped so low. By the second hour, we’re relatively hypoglycemic, dropping our blood sugar below where it was when we started out fasting. Our body freaks out and releases so much insulin that we actually overshoot. If you have people fast and then drink a glass of water with three tablespoons of sugar in it, which is about the amount in a can of soda, you get a big spike in blood sugar within the first hour. Drinking sugar water is bad for you, as I explored in If Fructose Is Bad, What About Fruit?. If your app can invoke the menu with snap layouts but isn't able to snap properly to the zone sizes, it's likely that your app's minimum window size is too large for the window to fit in the selected zone. What if my app's window shows snap layouts but isn't snapping properly? If your app uses Electron, update to the v13 stable release of Electron to enable snap layouts. If you have a custom title bar, then you can: If your app's main window has the maximize caption button available but does not show snap layouts, it may be because you've customized your caption buttons or title bar in a way that prevents it. Why doesn't my app show the snap layouts menu? This topic describes how to make sure your app shows the menu with snap layouts if the system does not show it automatically. Snap layouts will appear automatically for most apps, but some desktop apps may not show snap layouts. If the app's window has the maximize caption button available, the system will automatically show snap layouts when a user hovers the mouse over the window's maximize button. Snap layouts are tailored to the current screen size and orientation, including support for three side-by-side windows on large landscape screens and top/bottom stacked windows on portrait screens. After invoking the menu that shows the available layouts, users can click on a zone in a layout to snap a window to that particular zone and then use Snap Assist to finish building an entire layout of windows. Snap layouts are easily accessible by hovering the mouse over a window's maximize button or pressing Win + Z. Snap layouts are a new Windows 11 feature to help introduce users to the power of window snapping. So far, it seems players and coaches are cautiously optimistic the rule changes will be a good thing. A recent video on MLB.com - with the cheeky title “Get that shift … outta here!” - featured ‘Breaking Bad’ actor Bryan Cranston celebrating the changes. The emphasis on athleticism is at the core of what MLB wants in its 2023 games, and the sport has been aggressive in its marketing. “But trust me, we’re working on things behind the scenes.” “We didn’t want to tip our hand, to be honest with you,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of his team’s running strategy. Stolen bases and stolen-base attempts during spring training increased about 50% over the numbers from last year’s spring games.Īnd they could jump again in the regular season. If a pitcher disengages a third time and doesn’t record an out, a balk is called and all runners advance one base. Pitchers can only disengage from the rubber twice in each at-bat, meaning limited chances for pickoff attempts. The cat-and-mouse game between pitchers and would-be base stealers will be particularly intriguing during the season’s opening weeks. “Really, the power the pitcher has now - I can totally dictate pace,” the three-time Cy Young Award winner said. New York Mets ace Max Scherzer and other pitchers tried weaponizing the pitch clock, hurrying hitters or waiting them out within the bounds of the 15-second timer - 20 seconds with someone on base - to mess with their timing. “I think there will be a lot more gamesmanship during the regular season,” Cubs pitcher Drew Smyly said. Last week, the commissioner’s office sent a memo trying to clarify some rules issues from spring training.īut everyone knows the real test begins Thursday. MLB has also shown a willingness to listen to feedback from players. The bigger bases - which could help curb collisions and injuries - have hardly been noticed. The limitations on the infield shift haven’t been a particularly big concern. The good news for baseball is the rules changes have been widely praised during spring training. “I think this is going to be a huge adjustment.” “Nobody’s getting numbers stamped on the back of a baseball card during spring training. “This is the next level - having the rules applied in games that matter,” said Diamondbacks three-time All-Star Evan Longoria. They’ve been tested in spring exhibitions but weren’t used in the WBC. For many fans, it’ll be the first time seeing the sport’s sizable list of rules changes, including a pitch clock, limits on infield shifts and bigger bases. Major League Baseball’s new rules package is set for its regular-season debut Thursday when all 30 teams play their first game. “How are we possibly going to put a pitch clock on a situation like this?” Kelly said. But he also admitted there was a thought that crept through his head. Team USA pitcher Merrill Kelly said the storybook scene was just as dramatic for the players in the dugout as it was for fans watching. After graduating in 1958, he moved to London to attend the Royal College of Art, where he was instrumental in establishing the school’s film department.ġ961 saw the production of his very first film, an experimental short called BOY & BICYCLE. Scott’s interest in filmmaking came about by way of a passion for design, which he formally studied at the West Hartlepool College of Art. This left Ridley and his younger brother, Tony, in the sole care of their mother Elizabeth Williams, and many film scholars trace the director’s flair with strong female characters all the way back to her singular influence.Īfter the war, the Scotts settled along Greens Beck Road in Hartburn– the smoky industrial vistas of which would famously sear themselves into the mind of the young director as a formative influence for BLADE RUNNER’s dystopian vision of Los Angeles circa 2019. His older brother, Frank, was much older, also unable to serve as a father figure to young Ridley because of his duties to the British Merchant Navy. His father, Colonel Francis Percy Scott, was largely absent throughout much of Ridley’s early childhood due to his being an officer in the Royal Engineers during World War II. Scott was born on November 30th, 1937 in South Shields, County Durham, in northeastern England. Even as he enters his eighth decade of life, Scott remains a vital force in contemporary mainstream filmmaking, churning out a new film seemingly year after year with no end in sight. The three-time Oscar nominee brings a highly visual approach to fully-formed cinematic worlds, each successive film existing within its own contained universe (or sharing an existing universe in the case of his three films in the ALIEN franchise). The same can be said of his artistic legacy, which encompasses a deep body of work– some of them among the most influential films of all time. Simply put, Scott is a beast, and his work ethic is unparalleled. The latter of these features, the upcoming ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD, has been in the news recently because of Scott’s decision to remove Kevin Spacey from the finished film in the wake of the star’s sexual harassment scandal, replacing him with Christopher Plummer with only a scant few weeks to go before the film’s release. Indeed, Scott is one of the hardest-working filmmakers in the business– 2017 alone will see the release of no less than two of his features, and the man just turned eighty years old. The projects he takes on suggest more of a journeyman’s attitude to the craft rather than an artistic display of self-expression. Scott’s artistic character isn’t necessarily marked by a recurring set of themes or a specific visual style, although his filmography evidences plenty of examples for both. Still others, like celebrated British director Sir Ridley Scott, routinely defy such easy compartmentalization. There are many different kinds of auteurs– there are those, like Sofia Coppola or David Fincher, who are revered for a consistent artistic style, while others like Terrence Malick or Paul Thomas Anderson tend to dwell on a variation of the same set of ideological themes over the course of their work. This being a film journal about contemporary and classic film directors, I often invoke the term “auteur” to describe a filmmaker who brings a singular identity to bear on any given work.
